How to seek help for mental health in Pakistan

Cost, stigma, and not knowing where to start keep many people silent. Here is a practical path forward.

You have more options than you think

You do not have to start with an expensive private psychiatrist. Free and low-cost paths exist: government teaching-hospital psychiatry departments (OPD), non-profit helplines like Umang, Taskeen, and Rozan, and community services. Our directory lists professionals and institutions across 45 cities.

Who does what

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication. A clinical psychologist or counsellor provides talking therapy. Many people benefit from both. If you are unsure where to begin, a helpline or Zara can point you in the right direction.

Talking to your family

Telling family can be the hardest part in our culture. You might start small: "I've been feeling low for a while and I'd like to talk to a doctor about it, the way we would for anything else." Frame it as health, because it is. If family is not ready, a helpline or professional keeps it private.

Start today, gently

You do not have to fix everything at once. One message. One phone call. One appointment. That is enough for today. Zara can help you take whichever step feels possible.

You don't have to carry this alone
